The Seattle Cheder (school room) is a dual-curriculum day school that includes classes for preschool, kindergarten and elementary school boys and girls of all Jewish backgrounds. Started in 1973, the Cheder has grown to include a high school for girls. A warm, academic Torah studies curriculum is complemented by a solid general studies program. The Cheder is known for its emphasis on the whole child approach through building good midos (character), and it's emphasis on instilling a strong sense of Jewish identity and community.
Early childhood programs for preschool and kindergarten feature small classes and outstanding, experienced faculty. Students are exposed to both Hebrew and English language studies, music, art and drama. Ongoing theme projects include Derech Eretz, a program which stresses good midos (character), "mitzvah of the month", as well as science and language arts fairs. The children's artwork is a frequent feature on bulletin boards and at art shows.
The elementary school program (Grades 1 through 8) is highlighted by an advanced Judaica curriculum in English and Hebrew, and a complete general studies program. The school offers small classes, individual attention and caring and competent faculty. Graduates are proficient in Talmud, Chumash, literature and the sciences.
The girls' high school is noted for its accelerated Judaics program, taught by seasoned educators. The high school general studies curriculum prepares girls for seminary study or college courses after graduation. An outstanding musical production, after school activities, yearbook and mivtzoim (community work) are keynotes of this program.
